My policy and philosophy for using Remind/Remind Chat.
Please scroll below to see a running archive of all Remind messages sent to your class.
Remind Texts:
Remind (Formerly Remind101) offers a free app for teachers and their students. With this program, I can send text alerts to my students without actually having or knowing their cell phone numbers. The texts are archived in a rolling scroll on my website so that anyone without the app can still see what information I disseminating; however, that entails a child checking the Remind page of my website regularly. Some parents opted to also sign up and download the app so they could either share the information with their children themselves or to just have all the updates for the class for their own knowledge (there is also an email option for the reminders). The code for the particular class [ English 9H Code: @e8c4d4; English 8 Code: @668b2 ] can be accessed on my website . As most teens use their phones more than email, this is the best way to communicate with them. A log of remind messages sent from me scrolls in real time on my website so if a student is unable or not allowed to use the app, s/he may still read nightly messages by accessing my website.
Remind Chat is a two-way messaging service through this app. Students/ Parents may initiate conversations with me – or I may contact a student/parent directly with a specific problem or issue. This “chat” may be initiated through a computer (with the app) or via text message; however, the mobile number of the participants (teacher, parents, students) is NOT revealed. Instead, the messages go through a relay system and a random number is assigned to each participant. That number will be their ID phone number for the year. An archive of each communication is kept in Remind if there is ever a question regarding what was sent in the message. Students (and/or their parents) have initiated Remind Chats to me to have clarification on an assignment, to check the status of a grade, to arrange extra help or a test make up date for an absence, etc. I have initiated chats to confirm an arranged date (for extra help, test, etc.), to let a student know that a deadline is looming for a long term assignment and that child has not met the criteria (e.g., Achieve 3000), etc.
Both Remind and Remind Chat are optional and are not necessarily inclusive. A parent may agree to the Remind feature but elect not to allow his/her child to use the Remind Chat option.
Parents may also elect to use their own mobile device for messages to personally receive and convey to their children.
This app has been an immense help to students in the past year for everything from reminders of deadlines and assignments to alerts about changes to deadlines or materials needed for class. It has also enabled me to provide clarification on a question to an assignment or set of instructions that would be impossible to disperse on a large scale as quickly. Jupitergrades’s emails are helpful, but most students do not use their email accounts as often as they use their cell phones.
Please do not hesitate to call or email me if you have any questions regarding any of these Internet sites…or regarding any other policies discussed in this introduction to the class.
